To maintain FERPA and security compliance related to Murray State University students, employees, data, and systems, Information Systems has created this article to describe the process for requesting, using, and maintaining student worker network accounts.
Who needs a student worker account? - Any student who is employed at MSU as a student worker, teaching assistant, or graduate assistant and needs additional network access for their position will need a "student worker account" that is completely separate from their regular MSU account. Network access refers to a department-owned computer, network shares, or other MSU system access.
NOTE: Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants in Canvas will be handled differently.
Who can request a student worker account? - The student worker's supervisor or another appropriate staff/faculty member in that department can request a student a student worker account.
How do I request a student worker account? - Supervisors or another appropriate staff/faculty member can use the Employee Network Resource Request form to request the account. Once the account is created, a Service Desk staff member will provide the username and password to the supervisor via phone, who can pass that on to the student worker.
Canvas: If a teaching assistant or graduate assistance is needed in Canvas, please fill out the Add a TA, GA, or Instructor to a Course request form. This is only to be used for a student worker who is not currently enrolled in that course.
How long is a student worker account good for? - Student Worker accounts will expire at the end of the semester for which they are requested for (approximately May 15 or December 15). At the end of (or near the end of) the semester, the supervisor can request a semester extension for those accounts, if the student worker will be employed again the following semester.
